Newcastle-under-Lyme (/ˌnjuːkɑːsəl-/ NEW-kahss-əl-, locally /-kæs-/ -kass-;) is a market town in Staffordshire, England. At the 2011 census it had a population of 75,082.[2] It is part of the borough of Newcastle-under-Lyme, which had a population of 128,264 in 2016, up from 123,800 in the 2011 Census.[3]The "Newcastle" part of the name derives from being the location of a new castle in the 12th century.[4] The "Lyme" section could refer to the Lyme Brook or (as in the family name Lindhurst) the extensive Forest of Lyme that covered the area with lime trees in the Middle Ages.[4][5]
